About Ballet Folklorico Celestial

In 1991, Ballet Folklorico Celestial was founded when individuals decided to turn their shared interests into an official Student Club. After a couple of quick meetings, we were on our way to creating something extraordinary.

Ballet Folklorico Celestial is a student organization that teaches and performs traditional Mexican-style dancing. We are passionate about promoting Mexican culture, and we hope to showcase our colorful and rich culture to our community by dancing and performing.

With time, we’ve grown as an organization and took our interests to new levels. When you decide to join us, you will gain access to various events and, more importantly, to a community of people who are just as passionate as you are.

Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED TO JOIN!

Meet Our Officers

2022-2023

President & Co-Choreographer:
Christina Lemuz

Class year: 2024

Christina is an architectural engineering major from Fort Worth, TX! She joined BFC in the Fall of 2020 in hopes of being able to dance Folklorico again after years of not being able to. Her older sister danced for BFC, and this spurred her to join as soon as possible. She loved connecting with her roots and being around other people that share similar interests. Her favorite region is Jalisco!

Dances

Below are detailed descriptions of the origins of the dances we perform from each region.

Huasteca Tamaulipas

In Tamaulipas, the grand tradition is the “huapangos,” a word that derives from the Nahuatl Huapantli-co meaning "danced over wood." The music from the Huasteca region of Tamaulipas (the southern region) is very rhythmic and cheerful. The instruments employed in this rhythm are the violin, the “jarana,” and the “huapanguera.”
